A Colourful Journey: The Mulroy Swilly MS Support Group’s Bird Box Challenge
- On June 5, 2025
Over the past several weeks, the Mulroy Swilly MS Support Group embarked on a creative and uplifting journey through art therapy, and what a journey it has been!
It all began with the idea to paint 50 handmade bird boxes—a project that would bring colour, conversation, and connection to our weekly art therapy sessions. Led by the talented Bernadette Hopkins, our art therapist, the group gathered each week to add their unique touches to each wooden box. With paintbrushes in hand and creativity flowing, the once plain bird boxes quickly transformed into vibrant pieces of art.
During those early sessions, we were treated to the soothing birdsong performed by Lawrence, and shared Easter chocolates that kept the inspiration flowing. Familiar faces like Sarah, Martin, Noelle, Mary, Christine, and Pat worked side-by-side, chatting and laughing while bringing their artistic visions to life.
Each week, more progress was made. Bright colours, bold patterns, and personal touches emerged as the boxes took on their own characters. Members found joy in experimenting with designs and supporting one another’s work. As the weeks passed, the shelves filled up with box after beautiful box, each more creative than the last.
By the final session, all 50 bird boxes were fully painted—a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for everyone involved. Only the finer decorating details remained, and the excitement for the finished display began to build.
Our final art therapy morning marked the completion of the project. There was a strong sense of pride and togetherness as we stepped back and admired the colourful array of bird boxes that had come to life through the group’s dedication and creativity.
We want to extend heartfelt thanks to:
-
Bernadette Hopkins, for guiding us with warmth and inspiration throughout the project,
-
Cathryn, our wonderful volunteer, for always being there with a helping hand,
-
and Martin, who ensured the hall was ready and welcoming for us each week.
The bird boxes made their final appearance at our MS Coffee Morning on Friday, 30th May, held at the Reformed Presbyterian Church Hall. Visitors enjoyed tea, coffee, sandwiches, and handmade traybakes, and had the opportunity to purchase one (or more!) of these beautifully hand-painted bird boxes for €25, with all proceeds going directly to support the Mulroy Swilly MS Support Group.
The event was a wonderful success, filled with friendly faces, warm conversations, and plenty of admiration for the exquisite bird boxes on display.

Thank you to everyone who followed us on this journey, supported the project, or simply joined us for a cuppa and a chat. The birds will no doubt be delighted with their new homes—and we hope their new owners are just as proud to have them.
